Growth and yield of maize as affected by nitrogen fertilization and growth regulators [Egypt]

Two field experiments were conducted at the Experimental Farm, Fac. of Agric., Mansoura Univ., during the two successive seasons of 1986 and 1987. The experiments were laid out in a split-plot design with four replicates. The main plots contained three levels of nitrogen (30, 60 and 90 kg N/fad) and the subplots contained seven treatments of growth regulators which were: GA3 at 100, 200 or 300 ppm and CCC at 250, 500 or 750 ppm in addition to the control. The results indicated that, increasing nitrogen level up to 90 kg/fad significantly increased grain yield (ardab/fad) and most of its attributes which included number of ears/plant. 100-grain weight, shelling % and grain yield/plant. The application of GA3 at 100 ppm increased number of areas/plant, ear length and diameter, shelling % grain yield/ plant and grain yield/fad. On the other hand, CCC at 750 ppm gave the highest stem diameter and the lowest means for plant height, number of ears/plant, ear length and diameter, grain yield/plant and grain yield/fad. Therefore, it seemed that the addition of 90 kg N/fad and foliar spraying with GA3 at 100 ppm was the most favourable treatment combination for achieving the maximum grain yield.
