This investigation was carried out to study the effect of spraying Le-conte pear trees with Ethrel (2-chloracthyl phosphonic acid), after fruit set 60 days after setting on fruit drop, yield and fruit quality for two successive seasons 1979 and 1980. All concentrations increased fruit drop. Higher concentrations (300 and 400 ppm) were more effective than the lower ones. Ethrel at 200, 300 and 400 ppm in two sprays decreased fruit number, but the effect on yield was not clear, and tended to produce heavier and larger fruits than the untreated trees. All treatments at early spray in both seasons increased fruit dimensions at all fruit ages. Furthermore, early application tended to increase fruit acidity but late spray reduced fruit acidity. Spraying the trees with Ethrel increased T.S.S., especially at late spray. In both early or late application, Ethrel tended to increase total and reduced sugars but generally inhibited non-reducing sugars.
