Effect of seed grading by size and aerodynamic properties on onion (Allium cepa, L.) germination, survival and yield [Egypt]

Onion seeds are able to be separated by size and weight into different sizes and weights. Within any lot of seed sizes there are different seed weights. Seed weight was the most influential factor affecting germination and emergence. Elemental content in the seed was directly related to seed weight. Total bulb yield and total marketable yield per 100 seeds were also greatest for the heaviest seed. Separating onion seeds by weight increased total and marketable yield for Granex 33, Granex F1, and Behairy onion cultivars. Total yield and marketable yield increased by increasing nitrogen level up to 15% of the recommended level (153 Ib/a). Overall, seed separation by weight is recommended for direct seeded onion. Fertility program should be prepared on scientific basis each year for onion crop.
