Effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on growth, productivity and some physiological aspects of turnip [Egypt]

Turnip (Brassica rapa) plant was grown at two different levels each of N, P or K and some of their combinations at two successive seasons of 1986/1987 and 1987/1988. The results generally indicated that N fertilization at 30 kg alone or in combinations with P at 60 kg or K at 40 kg increased the number of leaves/plant. In addition, N-fertilization alone or in combination with P at 60 kg or K at 40 and 80 kg or PK resulted in increasing N % in leaves, while N alone or in combination with K at 40 or 80 kg or PK at 30:40 kg enhanced in roots. Phosphor was increased in leaves after fertilization with all treatments tested in this study, while P % in roots was significantly decreased in case of fertilization with K alone. Potassium content in leaves was not affected by any of the fertilization treatments, while K % in roots was decreased in case of almost all treatments except treatment 30-0-40 and 60-0-80 N-P-K kg/fed. Concerning total carbohydrates in roots, turnip plants received the lower level of N, P, K or NP, NK, NPK combinations gave less carbohydrates content than control. The most favourable treatment for vegetative growth, total root yield, total chloropyll and chlorophyll b was N-P-K 30-30-40 kg/feddan.
