Effect of zinc foliar application on barley yield and its content of zinc at different stages of growth [Egypt]

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of different levels of Zn foliar application on growth, yield and Zn content of barley plants at various stages of growth. The study was undertaken at the Experimental Station of the Faculty of Agriculture, Monoufeyah University. The obtained results could be summarized as follows: Foliar application of ZnSO4 significantly increased barley dry weights up to 2000 ppm level. However, further increases in ZnSO4 concentrations gradually decreased barley dry weights. Leaves and stems dry weights increased at earlier stages while spikes recorded a pronounced increase at later periods. Barley dry weights generally increased due to age. Absorbed Zn was markedly increased by Zn foliar application. The values of Zn content in leaves and stems increased up to the flowering stage and then decreased towards maturity while spikes showed a reverse trend. The absorbed Zn values generally increased with its foliar application up to 2000 ppm level and then decreased, yet this behaviour varied depending on organ, age and Zn level.
