Botanical difference between normal and reddened leaf plants and their progenies in three cotton varieties [Egypt]

Botanical differences between normal and reddened plants and their progenies were studied in three cotton cultivars during 1979 and 1980 seasons. The results indicate that reddened plants are inferior than normal ones in plant height, yield contributing traits, leaf pigments, and thickness of leaf midrib due mainly to the decrease in size of component cells. Progenies from normal plants surpassed those of reddened ones in all traits studied from the beginning of the growing season till maturity. The superiority was in plant height, number of leaves and leaf area, dry weight of stem, leaves and fruits, total nitrogen content in leaves and yield contributing characters. The differences in both seasons were mostly significant or highly significant.
