The composition of Egyptian buffalo milk fat as affected by feeding and milking time [Egypt]

Fat content from morning and evening milk of buffaloes fed on green fodder and dry ration was extracted and the fatty acids as well as the associated unsaponifiable compounds were isolated and analyzed by GIC. Data obtained revealed that changing the diet from dry ration to green fodder did not affect the percentage of unsaponifiable matters. Morning milk fat contained lower percentage of unsaponifiables compared with that of evening by about 50% regardless of the type of diet. The relative amounts of C12, C16, C18 and total odd-numbered fatty acids in buffalo milk fat showed an increase as affected by green fodder, while dry ration caused increase in relative concentrations of C14, C18:1 and total unsaturated fatty acids. It was evidently shown that morning buffalo milk fat contained higher levels of C6, C9, C10 and C16; while evening milk fat contained higher amounts of short chain (C6-C12) and total unsaturated fatty acids.
