Testing a model to help small-scale farmers in central Ashanti (Ghana) - a case study
1981
Dei, K.O.
Sixty randomly selected farmers in the Central Ashanti region of Ghana were interviewed to determine the effect of the Prairie View A and M University Model on yield, output, adoption and flaws in its introduction. The farmers were poor, could not adopt the model without credit facility, lived in poor conditions and were above 25 years in age but with long farming experience. Extension officers were absent in the area. Even though maize production with modern model cost about 25 % more than using the traditional method, there was mean net profit increase of nearly 930 %. 80 % of the farmers did not adopt the model because of unavailability of inputs even though the model was seen as helpful
