1986
Sallah, P.Y.K.
Production of maize a major cereal crop in Ghana is inadequate and its yield is partly due to extensive use of low yielding land and varieties. The paper highlights achievements in varietal improvement as a contribution to increase yields. Five major varietal types that satisfy variety needs of Ghana were identified as the 120 - day and 105 - day white dent, 110 - day yellow dent, 90 - day white soft dent and 90 - day yellow flint. Populations under improvement include La Posta, CIMMYT Pool 16, Golden Crystal, Tuxpeno and CIMMYT Population 31. Dobidi CRI, La Posta CRI, Golden Crystal, SAFITA 2 and Kawanzie CRI are the varieties recommended for Southern Guinea Savanna while SAFITA 2 and Kawanzie CRI are recommended for northern Guinea savanna areas
