Assessment of nitrogen fixation of various crops in northern Ghana

The paper discusses the experiments conducted at Nyankpala and Manga (Ghana) to assess the extent of nitrogen fixation by twelve legumes using a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Nodulation was assessed for three plants/plot at 5-6 weeks after planting (that is at physiological maturity). Leucaena leucocephala and Cicer arietinum failed to nodulate freely as compared with the other legumes. This demonstrated specific rhizobium requirements. The groundnut lines and varieties showed free and effective nodulation with naturally occurring brady rhizobia. Total nitrogen uptake was higher in fertilized soil in kernel, shells, haulms, and roots than in unfertilized soil with increases ranging from 9.5 - 63.5%. Fertilization (minus N) resulted in considerable differences in most symbiotic parameters examined, and enhanced symbiotic efficiency was reflected in increased nodulation, total nitrogen, dry matter accumulation and nitrogen fixation.
