Studies on the genetic diversities and yield components of open-pollinated and hybrid maize (Zea mays) varieties in Africa
1985
Oppong-Konadu, E.Y.
Genetic diversities and yield component trials of open pollinated and hybrid maize varieties developed by IITA (Ibadan, Nigeria) is reported. Hybrids had higher grain yield efficiency than open-pollinated checks. The best selected hybrids were 8322-13 and 8326-17 which yielded 9219 kg/ha and 8452 kg/ha respectively, which were significantly different from the best yielding open-pollinated variety ONNE TZPB (7054 kg/ha). On artificial imposition of maize streak disease pressure, higher grain yield potential of hybrids was observed. Hybrids 8322-13, 8328-10, and 8338-1 significantly yielded higher than even the improved streak resistant open-pollinated variety, PR 7843-SR. Less loss, on average, was observed for the hybrids than the open-pollinated checks
