Effect of nitrogen sources and levels on the growth and yields of onions [Allium cepa]
1980
Twum, A.
The effect of urea and sulphate of ammonia at two application levels of 340.90 kg N/ha and 227.27 kg N/ha, on the growth and yield of the Bawku red variety of onion is reported. Vegetative growth on non-fertilized plots was higher than on plants treated with urea, which in turn was higher than that with ammonia. Initiation of flowering was favoured by lower level urea treatment but by the higher level of ammonia. The higher levels of ammonia and urea produced higher fresh weight yield and larger bulbs than the lower levels. Flower initiation was at the expense of bulb size
