In the summer of 1983, a severe infestation of date (Phoenix dactylifera L.) fruits by larvae and adults of a Scolytidae beetle was observed in the regions of Phaleron (Attiki) and Xylokastron (Korinthia). Infestation was evident in the kernels of ripe or unripe fruits of the year, existing on the trees, as well as in the kernels of fruits from previous years existing on the ground. The insects had caused cylindrical galeries throughout the kernel ending to a round opening (0.7-0.8 mm in diameter) on the surface of the fruit. There were found up to 15 larvae and adults per fruit which had usually caused nearly complete disintegration of the kernel. Based on the data given by Balachowsky (1), the species was identified as Coccotrypes dactyliperda Fabricius, 1801
