The effect of irrigation with saline water on a cucumber (cv. Pepinex) culture in the greenhouse was studied during seasons 1980-81 and 1981-82 in a factorial experiment arranged with randomized blocks design. Twelve treatments, were tested, resulting from the combinations of three levels of the factor "soil" and the four levels of the factor "electric conductivity of the irrigation water". The three levels of "soil" were: (a) plain soil, (b) soil with green manure and (c) soil with manure in the amount 20 m3/str. The four levels of the factor "electric conductivity of the irrigation water" were 0.4, 7.04, 13.4 and 19.84 mmhos/cm obtained by adding 0, 4, 8 and 12 g of NaCl per liter of irrigation water. The results indicate that yield was reduced with increased electric conductivity, and at the levels 13.4 and 19.84 mmhos/cm there were extensive deaths of leaves and even, of whole plants. This adverse effect was seen in the number of fruits per plant, as well. This effect of electric conductivity was obvious in all three levels of the factor "soil" which themselves affected yields. The adverse effect of electric conductivity were more serious for the plain soil and less serious when manure was used. Intermediate results were seen in the case of green manure. The electric conductivity of the soil extracts and chloride content of leaves was significantly affected by the electric conductivity of the irrigation water. There was a linear relationship between electric conductivity of the water and the electric conductivity of soil extract and the chloride content of leaves. The soil treatments had no effect on these parameters
