Hungarian large white X durocF1 growing pigs were fed with a feed containing 5 mg/kg of T-2 toxin during 25 days. Thereafter the pigs were slaughtered. Erosions were found in the mucosa of lips and bucca, as well as on the tongue. This histological examination of affected areas revealed hyper- and parakeratosis, achantosis and infiltration of lymphocytes, neutrophils and macrophages in the corium. Severe vacuolar degeneration was observed in the epithelial cells of urothelium in the renal pelvis. Number of lymphocytes decreased significantly in the cortical substance of thymus in all treated pigs and the number of Hassal bodies increased in the medullar substance, as compared to the controls. In the spleen, the substance of white pulp was reduced: the periarteriolic lymphocytic capsule was thinner and more compact than normal. Diameter of Malpighian corpuscles decreased significantly. Owing to the significant reduction in the number of lymphocytes, follicles and medullary cords were also smaller and showed a looser structure in the lymph nodes. Histological changes of lymphoid organs have confirmed the results of authors' previous studies indicating that T-2 toxin inhibits the humoral and cellular immune responses in swine.
