Connections between the nutrient supply of cucumber and its sensitivity to mildew infection

The influence of various elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium) on young cucumber plants infected with Sphaerotheca fuliginea was studied. The plants grown in perlite substrate were watered for 10 weeks with Hoagland-Snyder nutrient solution containing the mentioned elements in different concentrations. The cucumber plants were inoculated in the first true-leaf stage. The effect of nutrients on the plants was measured on the number of leaves, the height of plants, fresh and dry weight and the level of infection was established based on the number of mildew spots. The total or partial absence of nutrients, as well as their overdosage depressed the plant development.
