Aetiological examination and therapy of bacterial genital infections in bitches

After detailed clinical examination of 2 to 8 years old German shepherds (n=74) originating from the same stock, swab samples were collected from the border of vaginal vestibule and vagina for bacteriological investigation. Of the dogs 31 (41.9 per cent) proved to be positive. Distribution of isolated bacteria was as follows: 54.8 per cent Staphylococcus aureus, 22.6 per cent Streptococcus pyogenes, 6.5 per cent E. coli, as well as Haemophilus sp., Bordetella sp., P. multocida, Bacteroides sp. and Klebsiella sp., total 16.1 per cent. Of the 31 bacteriologically positive cases, vestibulitis was found in 11 bitches (35.5 per cent), vestibulitis and vaginitis in 7 cases (22.6 per cent) while in case of 5 bitches (16.1 per cent) expressed purulent discharge was also observed besides vestibulitis and vaginitis. The other bitches showed no clinical alterations. After the intravaginal application of Tardomyocel L.Salbe three times in three days intervals, all the animals became symptomless and free of pathogens.
