[Yield trial, leaf and protein contents of five alfalfa varieties in Ahvaz]

A 3-year (1984-1987) field trial was conducted at college experimental station Ahvaz to evaluate the seasonal growth, productivity, leaf and protein content of five alfalfa varieties (3 local and 2 introduced). Fresh herbage yields of all varieties were highest in April, began to decline due to hot weather later. Bamy (local) and Diabelverde (US introduction) with about 159 T/ha fresh herbage and 38 T/ha dry herbage had the highest herbage yields. Nichshahri (local) had higher yields during the summer months. When all varieties had a yield depression, Mopa (Italian introduction), Diabelverdo Yasdi (local) and Bamy had higher percentage of leaf and crude protein, respectively. However, as Bamy and Diabelverdo had higher herbage yields, their protein content per unit area would be higher too, and therefore, they are regarded as the best yielding and most adapted varieties in this study. As Bamy can well compete with Diabelverdo, and its seed can be produced at home, so in this experiment this variety can be introduced for the region
