[Ultrastructural studies of chromium deposits in cauliflower seedlings (Brassica oleracea botrytis L.)]

Ultrastructural studies of root and leaf cells of cauliflower seedlings experimentally exposed to low concentrations of soluble chromium (Cr) salts revealed small electron dense granules especially on the inner surface of root cell walls. Granular deposits were more frequent in cells of Cr** (3+)-treated plants than those supplied with Cr** (2-). Deposits were also noted in vacuoles. Control seedlings grown in the absence of chromium additions were void of any deposits. X-ray microanalysis in E.M.M.A. 4 provided evidence that chromium was the predominant element in the deposits while lower concentrations of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) were also measured. It is concluded that the presence of these cell inclusions may be regarded as a detoxifying mechanism in plant cell
