Studies on some principal factors involved in cold hardiness of Hibiscus syriacus L., II; cold hardiness in relation to plant temperature and plant constituents

Studies were conducted to investigate some major factors influencing cold hardiness in Hibiscus syriacus in order to provide basic data for future breeding works and safety cultivation of the national flower through this country. The highest mean temperature of plant parts was recorded at 5cm below soil surface and the lowest in the lower stem. It showed a similar tendency in the morning and afternoon. The amount of total soluble carbohydrates showed a negative tendency in relation to cold hardiness and gradually increased from upper stem to root. Upper stem showed the highest lipid content while the nitrogen of root and upper stem was higher than that of middle stem. However any of these didn't show a consistent tendency in relation to cold hardiness. In fatty acid analysis by gas-chromatography, nine fatty acids were detected and the linoleic acid was the highest in contents. The percentage of unsaturated fatty acids in 'Yeonggwang' was higher than that in 'Ognyeo'. It appears that the relative quantity of unsaturated fatty acid is positively correlated with the strength of cold hardiness. In sugar analysis by high performance liquid chromatography, five sugars were detected. The higher contents of sucrose and glucose seem to be positively correlated to the cold hardiness
