Suppression of red pepper Phytophthora blight by antagonistic rhizobacteria

Excellent antagonistic bacteria, AC-1 (Bacillus sp.) to phytophthora blight of red pepper was selected from rhizosphere samples collected from Kyonggido and Chungchongbukdo through in vitro test and in vivo test. It showed good control efficacy against the disease in green house, vinyl house, and controlled culturing area. It was cultured well on patato semisynthetic broth media, pH 7.3, and at 28deg C. Optimum treatment concentration of AC-1 was 10** (7) cells/ml. Amount of colonized AC-1 was reduced in proportion to soil depth. In resistance to fungicides for controlling Phytophthora blight of red pepper, metalaxyl Wp had no effect on growth of AC-1, meanwhile metalaxyl/copper Wp did. When it was subcultured 15 times, antifungal activity was sustained. As a result of foliar application and soil drenching of AC-1, symptoms like pathogenecity and phytotoxicity to 9 crops were not observed. Also toxicological test was conducted as measuring oral, dermal, and fish toxicity. Consequently, AC-1 was evaluated as stable and safe isolate
