Studies on growth characteristics in soybean varieties of Korea and Japan, 1; varietal differences in cold tolerance at early growth stage of soybeans

Under two different temperatures, normal temperature (25deg C) and low temperature (15deg C), 8 major varieties of Korean and Japanese soybeans were cultivated to elucidate varietal differences in cold tolerance at early growth stage. Soybeans cultivated at low temperature decreased 10-32 % more and delayed 5-10 days longer than ones at normal temperature in growth factors such as emergence, sprouting, plant elongation, leaf development, root nodulation, leaf area, chlorophyll content, and so on. Especially, leaf area, plant weight, number of root nodules, and plant height among the growth factors greatly decreased at low temperature and long leaf type varieties, Shirome nagaha, Tokachinagaha, Nanbushirome, and Paldal, showed a greater average decrease rate than the other varieties. The fact that low temperature caused a great decrease at early growth stage will help breeding and selection in soybeans
