Compatibility of four fungicides with a strain specific rhizobium sp. on chickpeas (Cicer arietinum)

In pot and laboratory studies, four fungicides were tested for their effect on the Rhizobium strain 2-ICAR-Mor-Ch-192 specific to chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.) using two cultivars ILC 482 and ILC 1930. The fungicides were prochloraz and chlorothalonil (foliarly applied), thiabendazole and tridemorph and maneb (seed applied), at the rates 2.5 cc/lit, 3 g/lit, 3 g/kg seed and 3 g/kg seed, respectively. None of the fungicides showed any significant effect on shoot dry weight, number, size and dry weight of nodules, acetylene reduction, shoot protein percentage and nitrogen content except for Tecto-60R, which showed higher shoot protein percentage and nitrogen content in some cases. DaconilR interacted positively and significantly with ILC 1930 in nodule number. Regression analysis showed no relationship between acetylene reduction and total shoot nitrogen except at pod filling stage. In addition, nodule dry weight had a positive and highly significant relationship with foliage dry weight and nitrogen content, number of pods and acetylene reduction. In the laboratory studies, Calixin MR when in direct contact with rhizobia was extremely toxic to the rhizobia even at quarter the recommended rate. On the other hand, the inoculum when in peat base was not affected by any of the fungicides. TBZ did not show any toxicity even at twice the recommended rate. Prochloraz and chlorothalonil were not toxic at the recommended rate or lower, although these chemicals were recommended to be foliarly applied.
