Effects of waxy and hulless genes on endosperm quality, yield and its related traits in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)., 2; dosage and environmental effects of Wx gene on the amylose content of barley endosperm

To evaluate the Wx gene effect on the amylose content, four genotypes wxwxwx, wxwxWx, wxWxWx and WxWxWx of barley endosperm were obtained through hybridization between the lines with waxy and/or non-waxy. Isogenic lines with waxy and hulless genes were developed from Masankwamaek/Kangbori*7 cross. The amylose content of the endosperm was significantly different among genotypes. The dosage effect of the Wx allele seemed to be linearly additive in its action on the amylose content increase, though amylose content is not directly proportional to the added number of Wx genes. In dosage effect of Wx to wx allele, the first Wx gene added demonstrated the highest amylose content increase in the endosperm followed by second and third Wx alleles incorporated. The amylose content was higher in the grains matured under low temperature than high temperature condition and in the grains matured in the whole glume than cut glume. These environmental effects on grain maturation demonstrated same tendencies in waxy-hulled, waxy-hulless, nonwaxy-hulless and nonwaxy hulled isogenic lines
