[Slow leaf rusting resistance of Puccinia recondita tritici in wheat]

Four lines (Katahdin, Pavon, Juzco and Dove) of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were tested under greenhouse and field conditions to determine their slow leaf rusting resistance comparing with susceptible variety INIA 66. A mixture of urediospores from two isolates of leaf rust Puccinia recondita tritici (82068-B and 82076-A) which are virulent for the genotypes at seedling stage was used. Under greenhouse conditions, the susceptible variety INIA 66 showed more uredias per square centimeter and larger uredia than the lines, at adult plant and seedling stages, eventhough the latent period was the same (eight days). Under field conditions INIA 66 showed the highest area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) at the adult plant stage. Based on number and uredia size, it was not possible to distinguish which line was more resistant in the greenhouse; nevertheless taking the AUDPC as slow rusting resistance index, differences observed under field conditions were effective for distinguishing degrees of resistance between genotypes. INIA 66 showed the highest AUDPC value, then it retained its classification as susceptible; Juzco and Pavon showed and intermediate degree, while Katadhin and Dove showed the lowest AUDPC, and therefore the highest degree of slow rusting resistance.
