[Nutritional status of forest plantations. 1. Nutritional deficients of Pinus radiata D. Don in Ayotitla, Guerrero]

The nutritional status of Pinus radiata, a promisoy species for Mexico, was evaluated in a plantation at Ayotoxtla, Gro. Levels of macro and micronutrients in the needles were compared with values reported in the literature as critical or not sufficient. In addition, some soils chemical characteristics were related to needle nutrient levels. One hundred percent of the sampled trees had phosphorus levels considered low or deficient (mayor que 0.12 percent), while a 31 percent showed marginal concentrations of nitrogen (1.20 to 1.50 percent). The plant nutritional status of the other nutrients studied was satisfactory with exception of iron and copper. The 78 and 9 percent of the trees presented marginal concentrations of these elements (50 to 100 ppm of Fe and 2 to 4 ppm of Cu). The results of the chemical analysis of the plant tissue confirmed the visual sympthoms of cooper deficiency observed in some trees. The plant chemical analysis showed to be an efficient diagnostic tool to assess the nutritional status of Pinus radiata and help to confirm the visual symptoms of deficiency.
