[Effect of different apple rootstocks (Malus pumila Mills) under fruit development and quality of the strip apple selection]

The effect of different apple rootstocks East Malling (EM) and Malling Merton (MM) on the phyisiological disorder Bitter pit, fruit development and quality were studied. Storage fruit were kept at 3+-1 grade centigrad and 75 percent relative humidity. The harvested fruit was classified in terms of pedicel length. The observations indicate that the fruits harvested from rootstocks of intermediate vigor, showed a lower degree of incidence of Bitter pit, virus symptoms, high content of total soluble solids, suitable shape as indicated by the ratio lenght per diameter of the fruit and higher firmness. Another interesting observation was that fruits with long pedicel in general, showed better quality than fruits of short pedicel.
