[Contribution to regional study of beef market in Mexico]

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the main economic relationships between the demand for beef in the metropolitan area of Mexico City and the capacity of the supply of beef by the mexican tropics, during the priod 1963-1983. The methodology used in the analysis consisted in the application of the three-stage least squares method to simultaneous equations model, which explain the economic relationships observed in this sector. The varibles to be explained by the estimated equations were: The price of beef cattle slaughter in the metropolitan area, the rural price of live cattle, the quantity supplied in the tropical states (Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz), and the quantity demanded for beef in the metropolitan area. The results showed that the wholesale price of beef is seen as an indicator by the farmers in producing states, as it showed the market behavior in the metropolitan area, furthermore, the price of live cattle and the price of yearling calves determine the short-run supply of beef. In addition, the Mexican tropics is able to respond to the changing indications of the beef market in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. Finally, it seems to be full evidence on the fact that the lower levels of beef consumptions are the results of the unefficient maketing structure for beef
