Data from 81 egg and larval surveys conducted from 1964 to 1986 off Peru were analyzed with emphasis on the interrelationships between sardine egg, larvae of mackerel and horse mackerel, sea surface temperature (SST) and SST anomaly, turbulance and anchoveta biomass. A significant negative correlation was found between anchoveta biomass and sardine eggs, while a significant positive correlation was found to occur between SST and the abundance of mackerel and horse mackerel larvae. Some biological implications of these findings are provided.
