Farmers' perceptions, education and adoption of pest management strategies by small farmers

Many recommended pest management strategies require considerable information and knowledge for their effective use. Small farmers in developing countries may have only limited access to pest management information sources and may only be beginning to learn basic concepts of non-traditional pest management. Lack of both information and knowledge are likely to retard adoption of pest management recommendations. Reported here also are results from pest perception studies in India and review studies on the economic gains from establishing and adoption of control threshold. Data from small sample of farmers in India are evaluated to determine if lack of education, riskiness, or other factors are retarding the adoption of insect treatment threshold in pigeonpea production. Use of insect counts to either initiate or time multiple treatments are evaluated
