Effect of fruit position and fruit load per cluster on seed quality in open-pollinated tomato seed production [Taiwan]

The effects of fruit position on the mother plant and the number of fruits per cluster on the viability of seeds of two tropical tomato varieties known to be resistant to bacterial wilt were determined. The study was conducted at the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center [Taiwan] from October 1986 to February 1987. Based on fruit size, seed yield and number of seeds per fruit, CL 5915-93D4-1-0-1-2 gave heavier fruits and seeds and the highest seed count per fruit than CL 5915-223D4-2-1-0. The heaviest fruits and seeds were produced when two fruits were allowed to develop per cluster. On the other hand, fruit cluster position on the mother plant did not influence fruit size, seed yield and percentage germination but affected number of seeds per fruit, weight of 1000 seeds and germination rate. Although the number of seeds increased from the lower fruit zone to the upper fruit zone, weight and yield of seeds, germination rate and percentage germination declined.
