Feronia limonia: a potential source of a botanical to control Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)

Cowpea bruchids, Callosobruchus spp. are serious pests of grain legumes in storage in Sri Lanka. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the pest control activity of root, bark, and leaves of the woodapple, Feronia limonia L., tree that grows wild in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. The powdered plant parts and their petroleum ether extracts were tested against C. chinensis. Adult mortality, eggs per seed, and the number of F1 adults emerged were the criteria to assess the efficacy of the treatments. The root, bark and leaves in powder form were ineffective, but petroleum ether extract leaves was slightly effective. The bark and the root extract suppressed (more than 90%) F1 adult emergence significantly. This reduction in pest population was primarily due to the ovicidal activity of the extracts. Bergapten - a coumarin compound ovicidal, present in the extract was responsible for ovicidal action.
