Beef production on Leucaena-Imperata pastures and cattle feeds on small farms in the Philippines

Animal production in the Philippines could be improved substantially by the use of leucaena based pastures. Beef production on Imperata, leucaena pastures is three times that of production from Imperata alone, and more than 400 kg live weight gain has been obtained from Guinea grass, leucaena pastures. At present, however, leucaena's use on small farms varies, depending on the cropping system. The feeds for livestock on these farms are directly related to crops grown because farmers extensively use farm by-products and weeds as animal feeds.
