Production and harvesting of bacteria biomass

Continuous aeration of pig wastes was carried out in race-track oxidation ditches underneath slotted floors of 2 pig barns. A bacterial mixed liquor biomass with a crude protein content of 42% on dry matter basis was produced and was used in feeding trials. Pigs whose rations were supplemented with mixed liquor biomass performed worse than those fed the standard corn/soybean ration mixed with tap water. The oxygen transfer and other parameters of two types of aerators were also measured. The in-situ aeration system produced excellent quality effluent with good product yield but lower crude protein recovery than fungal fermentation systems
