The effects of substituting domestic [Yugoslav] protein nutrients for imported ones in calf feeding

The best production results in calf fattening are achieved when they are fed with mother's milk, or when protein requirements are covered mostly by this nutritional source. Substituting milk protein with another source of protein, of animal origin, can be successful if the biological value is similar to the milk value (fish meal). Slightly less suitable are single-cell proteins (yeast and excellent quality proteins of plant origin (soybean meal). Incomplete proteins of animal origin (dry whey) and inferior plant nutrients (peas, thermally treated soybean) give poorer production results. The use of inorganic nitrogen in calf feed is possible when the calves become accustomed to dry feed.
