"Diversification" including the integration of other crops with cane

This paper draws attention to the wealth of experience in the cane world with "diversification" - within cane, out of cane, around cane. Examples are given of catch-cropping and inter-cropping and a "fundamental question" is posed about the suitability of typical cane land for sustained annual cropping. Finally, I have tried to summarize the experience of other cane industries in the Western Hemisphere in terms of what "diversifications" appear to have been most successful.
