Effect of various concentrations of ascorbic acid on the oviposition and hatchability of silkworm, (Bombyx mori L.) [in Bangladesh]

Effect of different concentrations of ascorbic acid, viz.; 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9% supplemented with normal mulberry leaf has been investigated on the fecundity and hatchability of silkworm, Bombyx mori L., race Nistari/L. The experiment was conducted in two batches treated leaves supplied to 3rd-5th instar and in another batch only to 5th instar larvae in the regular feeding schedule. Effect of ascorbic acid was found to be significant with respect to total number of eggs laid per female for both the batches. However, the results were insignificant for hatching percentage. Supplementation of 5% ascorbic acid with the diet of 3rd - 5th age and 3% to 5th age larvae produced the maximum number of eggs.
