Effect of topping on the growth and yield of potato [in Bangladesh]

Influence of topping on the yield potential of the potato var. Kufri sindhuri was investigated during two potato seasons, 1987-88 and 1988-89. Topping of plants were done at different days like, 30, 45, 60, 30-45, 30-60, 45-60 and 30-45-60 after planting, and the control where topping was not done. Growth analysis of plants were done starting after 30 days of planting and continued upto 80 days at 10 days interval. Significant differences among the treatments for all the parameters like, root length, number of leaves and leaf area per plant, number of tubers per plant, tuber yield (t/ha) dry wt. of leaves, plant (stem) and tubers were observed. The plant showed significantly well performance for all the parameters except root length when topped at 30+45 dry after planting. In this treatment, the yield was increased by 81.34% over the control. Positive and strong correlation were obtained between leaf area vs yield, dry wt. of leaves vs yield and dry wt of plant (stem) vs yield. Growth analysis show that dry matter accumulation was higher in leaves than stem. This accumulation was continued upto 70 days and then it decreased. Accumulation was quicker in the leaves than the stem. Sharp accumulation of dry matter in the tubers upto 80 days was observed.
