Survival of lentil rhizobia on peat soil under different temperatures [in Bangladesh]

The objective of the present study was to test the survival rate of rhizobial isolates in different indigenous peats under three different temperatures. Peat soil was collected from eight locations of Bangladesh from a depth of 180-300 cm. Maximum number (4.6 x 10(9) % of peat) of lentil rhizobia survived in the "Gobra peat". Whereas the number declined with Narail location (0.3 x 10(9), Ghamta, Udaipur, Panchkohonia, Haridaspur, Tungipara and Mollahat location contained 3.2 x 10(9), 3.1 x 10(9), 2.9 x 10(9), 2.2 x 10(9), 2.2 x 10(9) and 0.7 x 10(9) number of lentil rhizobia respectively after 45d of storage at normal temperature. A positive correlation was obtained between some physical and chemical properties of peat soil and (viable count of) viability of lentil rhizobia. Survival of lentil rhizobia in selected "Gobra peat" varied with different temperatures. Survival rate was highest at low temperature (4 deg. C1) followed by room temperature (25 deg. C4) and cell number declined rapidly at elevated temperature (37 deg. C1). Satisfactory number of lentil rhizobia (i.e. 10(8)/g of peat) remained viable upto 110d at 4 deg. C1. 80d at 25 deg. C4 and 30d at 37 deg. C1.
