Ultrastructural diversities and their functional aspects the seeds of Cassia tora L.

Saha, P.K. | Bhattacharya, A.
A seed lot of Cassia tora L. showed some morphological differences, specially in the structure of micropyle and strophiole. These seeds were classified into two distinct categories 'A' and 'B'. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the seed surface of category 'A' is smooth with micropyle closed by micropylar plug, intact strophiole and strophiolar groove closed by a strophiolar ring. In category 'B' the seed surface is rough with pores, micropyle is open with funnel shaped micropylar groove and a gap is present between the intact strophiole and the cracked strophiolar ring. Germination test indicated that category 'A' seeds did not germinate, whereas category 'B' seeds showed germination. The ultrastructures are related to the variation in germination.
