Food gathering and sustenance: an ethno-botanical study in eastern India

Food gathering from the nature associated with hunting practices is still vague, mostly among primitive tribal groups in different parts of the world. The present undertaking is focussed on a few representative tribal groups living in parts of eastern India, especially in the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. On the basis of intensive field survey carried out among some of these groups it has been observed that they are largely dependent on plant food. Out of various plants used by the tribal groups the species of Dioscorea and Agaricus have been selected for the present study in order to find out their food values such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals which give balanced food. In the present paper aims, methodology, data and results have been put forward with a view to arriving at the inference.
