Varietal difference in physiological activities of wheat [in Bangladesh]

Photosynthesis and transpiration rates and water use efficiency of 14 field grown wheat varieties were compared during 1988-89 growing season. Among the varieties Sonalika exhibited the highest photosynthesis (Pn) rate giving 32.64 mg dm(-2) hr(-1) Kalyansona showed maximum leaf conductance rate (118.74 m mol m(-2) s(-1) that eventually gave the highest transpiration rate, considering CO2 exchange and transpiration rates, variety Kanchan gave the greatest water used efficiency (1.85 mu mol (-1)). Photosynthetic rate was found uncorrelated with leaf chlorophyll content.
