Comparison on pathogenicity of soft rot Erwinias to potato tubers and tuber susceptibility to the bacteria

There was a great variation in pathogenicity to potato tubers at temperatures tested among soft rot erwinias. When temperature was at 21 plus or minus 1 C degrees, Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica (Eca) has the strongest virulence, Erwinia chrysanthemi (Ech) the weakest, but at 26 plus or minus 2 C degrees, Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora (Ecc) induced the largest soft rot, followed by Ech, while when temperature was at 31 C degrees, the order of pathogenicity was Ech, Ecc and Eca. Virulence of Ecc and Ech was gradually increased as temperature increased. Eca has the weakest pathogenicity at 26 plus or minus 2 C degrees. The susceptibility of 2 varieties could be exchanged by changes in inoculum methods. On the tubers, stem end was always more susceptible than bud end
