The visual method of testing the germinating wheat for their tolerance to free aluminium cations in a nutrient solution has been verified in an air-conditioned chamber at room temperature. When testing a set of 24 varieties and advanced lines of winter and spring wheat, we have found four different degrees of tolerance to the influence of toxic Al3+ at two different concentrations (20 and 40 ppm Al.l-1 solution): tolerant, medium tolerant, medium predisposed and predisposed plants. The determination of the four degrees was carried out by visually evaluating the regenerated root growth in an environment without free aluminium cations by comparing the tested genotypes with check varieties: Atlas 66 (tolerant), Alondra (medium tolerant), Druchamp (medium predisposed) and Brevor (predisposed). Because of the simplicity and reproducibility of gained results, the screening method is suitable for evaluating genetic materials in practical breeding.
