In 3 series of greenhouse experiments with 3 alfalfa varieties inoculated by nodule bacteria (Rhizobium meliloti) and bacterial wilt (Corynebacterium michiganense pv. insidiosum) the differences in number of nodules R. meliloti per plant were found in dependence on varieties. The differences in number of nodules between healthy and diseased plants were highly significant. High degree of bacterial wilt development had a significantly negative effect on the occurrence of nodules on alfalfa roots. In all varieties and variants infected by C. michiganense negative dependence between the degree of sickness and number of nodules was observed (r = -0.60 to -0.918++). In case of sensitive varieties inoculated by R. meliloti in seed and at early infection of cotyledons with C. michiganense, the bacteria of C. michiganense developed better and they restrained development of R. meliloti.
