European larch (Larix decidua), as the only Czechoslovak deciduous coniferous species, begins to arouse at present greater interest of forest specialists when the problems of air pollution and forest stand damage are discussed to be solved. This is the reason why the effects of low and crown thinnings in research areas and natural thinning in control area were investigated; another objective was to study the effects of cultural treatments on the structure, development and increments of these stands. Research areas were laid out in 1962 and they were evaluated three times in five-year intervals. In this stand larch is mixed with broad-leaved trees, mainly with beech. The forest type at this site is Querceto-Fagetum with Carex pilosa (3S7). The results demonstrate that the growing stock is highest in the area with crown thinning: this applies to the growing stock of larch converted per 1 ha as well as to the total volume production. The same results are given by a comparison of tree quality. In the last two periods of measurements the production in control area and in the area with low thinning began to increase. The effect of a ten-year thinning interval was found to be negative because it resulted in a production decrease. A conclusion can be drawn that the younger larch stand should be thinned in a shorter (about five-year) interval; the tending of dominant and codominant trees is also necessary. In older stands low thinnings must be performed to boost sufficient and highest possible increments of these stands.
