In twelve varieties of winter and spring wheat the following characteristics were investigated in 27 environments (three years, three sites, three sowing rates): two upper leaf areas, stand density, grain yield nad LAI conversion. The largest leaf area and highest LAI were observed in the winter wheat varieties Maris Marksman, Kormoran and Super Zlatna, in the spring wheat varieties the same applied to Jara. The genotype differences demonstrated a dependence of grain yield on LAI (r = 0.67; b = 2.64). The phenotype fluctuation of LAI in different environments had greater effects on grain yield only in some varieties (all spring varieties, among the winter varieties mainly Super Zlatna and Maris Marksman). The effects of site and year are especially important in view of the LAI phenotype variability, the effect of sowing rate is lower.
