Relationship between the content of total phenolics (TP) or dihydricphenols (DP) in different varieties and their soft rot resistance was researched. A positive relation was found between DP content in the stored tubers and their resistance. In 9 out of 17 varieties, the TP content was negatively related to disease resistance. Treating tubers at low temperatures or at anaerobic condition could reduce their resistance, but showed various effects on the TP content of different varieties. Both TP and DP content in rotted tissues were reduced, while a lot of DP accumulated in tissues adjacent to rotting tissues. The role in potato resistance played by phenolics was discussed
