The reciprocal effects of prior invasion by root-knot nematode or by endomycorrhiza on certain morphological and chemical characteristics of Egyptian clover plants

The reciprocal effects of prior invasion by Meloidogyne incognita (Mi), or by vesicular-arbuscular vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi were investigated using Egyptian clover plants grown outdoors in pots. Preinoculation with VAM fungi significantly nullified the detrimental effects of postinfection by Mi on plant growth even though the nematode population was unaffected. The significant increase in total-N (mg) and phosphorus (p) content in shoots of plants preinoculated with VAM fungi was due to the increase in dry weight of shoots. When Mi combined with or followed by VAM fungi plant growth, total-N (mg) and P content (mg/shoot) decreased in comparison with VAM alone.
