As a result of further intensification of production systems and the hybrid breeding being compolled to adjust itself to this, as well as the genetic improvement adapting itself to extreme demands, the process of gene erosion will probably accelerate. The process of gene erosion originally appeared in the prolific poultry species /hen, turkey/. The deterioration of the parental and grand parental lines involved in hybrid production can be regarded as a consequence of gene erosion. The damaging consequences of gene erosion - through the production of newer and newer hybrids - can be temporarily counterbalanced. The furter increase of egg number and mass will eventually encounter the sort of anatomic and physiologic hindrances that cannot be prevented by genetic methods in the foreseeable future. As a consequence of the partial adaptation of animal populations, the frequency of such genes which determine the phenotypic manifestation of characteristic indicates that immediate breeding purposes can also diminish considerably. Thus the gene erosion can cause indirect harm.
